چکیده

Two model problems for stii oscillatory systems are introduced. Both comprise a linear superposition of N 1 harmonic oscillators used as a forcing term for a scalar ODE. In the rst case the initial conditions are chosen so that the forcing term approximates a delta function as N ! 1 and in the second case so that it approximates white noise. In both cases the fastest natural frequency of the oscilla-tors is O(N): The model problems are integrated numerically in the stii regime where the time-step t satisses N t = O(1): The convergence of the algorithms is studied in this case in the limit N ! 1 and t ! 0: For the white noise problem both strong and weak convergence are considered.

On second derivative 3-stage Hermite--Birkhoff--Obrechkoff methods for stiff ODEs: A-stable up to order 10 with variable stepsize

Variable-step (VS) second derivative $k$-step $3$-stage Hermite--Birkhoff--Obrechkoff (HBO) methods of order $p=(k+3)$, denoted by HBO$(p)$ are constructed as a combination of linear $k$-step methods of order $(p-2)$ and a second derivative two-step diagonally implicit $3$-stage Hermite--Birkhoff method of order 5 (DIHB5) for solving stiff ordinary differential equations. The main reason for co...

Approximation by Aliasing with Application to "Certaine" Stiff Differential Equations

The usual method of finding an accurate trigonometric interpolation for a function with dominant high frequencies requires a large number of calculations. This paper shows how aliasing can be used to achieve a great reduction in the computations in cases when the high frequencies are known beforehand. The technique is applied to stiff differential equations, extending the applicability of the m...

Extended Block Integrator for First-Order Stiff and Oscillatory Differential Equations

In this paper, we consider the development of an extended block integrator for the solution of stiff and oscillatory first-order Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) using interpolation and collocation techniques. The integrator was developed by collocation and interpolation of the combination of power series and exponential function to generate a continuous implicit Linear Multistep Method (...

An Averaging Technique for Highly Oscillatory Hamiltonian Problems

In this paper, we are concerned with the numerical solution of highly-oscillatory Hamiltonian systems with a stiff linear part. We construct an averaged system whose solution remains close to the exact one over bounded time intervals, possesses the same adiabatic and Hamiltonian invariants as the original system, and is non-stiff. We then investigate its numerical approximation through a method...

A hybrid method with optimal stability properties for the numerical solution of stiff differential systems

In this paper, we consider the construction of a new class of numerical methods based on the backward differentiation formulas (BDFs) that be equipped by including two off--step points. We represent these methods from general linear methods (GLMs) point of view which provides an easy process to improve their stability properties and implementation in a variable stepsize mode. These superioritie...
